Description Edit

STREET SHEET, established in 1989 by the Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco, is the oldest continuously published street newspaper in North America.

Organizationally, it is the public education and outreach tool of the Coalition on Homelessness. Every month, the STREET SHEET reaches 32,000 readers through 230 homeless or low-income vendors. Our vendors are charged nothing for the papers they receive, and keep all money they earn through STREET SHEET distribution.

A few months ago, I was approached by James Baumann, a student at San Francisco State University. He wanted to use STREET SHEET as the subject of a short film he was making for school. I invited him to attend our weekly staff meeting and present his ideas there. Unlike most of the people who express interest in doing similar projects, James actually came with a presentation. The staff approved the project and it was completed rather quickly. Usually these things just don't materialize.

This afternoon, as I was sitting at my desk working on the paper (today's deadline), James came in and presented me and several other staff members with copies of his project.

That project is the video you're watching. And we appreciate any attention the project may bring to our work.

The Coalition on Homelessness was formed in 1987 toto foster the active participation of homeless and low-income San Franciscans and front-line staff in the struggle for economic and social justice. Through an integrated approach that combines outreach, peer support, leadership development, public education, advocacy, and community organizing, the Coalition works to defend homeless and low-income people from attacks on their rights and their persons, while advocating for permanent solutions to homelessness that take into account not only poverty's devastating effects, but also its root causes. If you're interested in becoming involved in the Coalition or the STREET SHEET's work, please come by the Coalition on Homelessness, 468 Turk Street (Between Larkin and Hyde), San Francisco, CA or call me 415-346-3740 ext. 309 or by e-mail at: kdotson@streetsheet.org
